I’m reading John to my daughters at lunch today. It’s a new thing I’m trying, reading to them directly from the Bible. I don’t figure they understand it, not entirely, but I know from experience that the Bible’s magic, so why not? Right?

Anyway, they seem to be paying attention. Sort of. And then I read this: “Having said this, Jesus spit on the ground.”

London’s eyebrows raise immediately. I pause before I read the next line, waiting for her full reaction. She says, drawing out the words, “Hmm. THAT’s interesting.”

And so I guess I’ll be reading directly from the Bible with my four year old more often.
